Today, we remember and honor a true American hero, General Gordon Russell Sullivan.

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of General Gordon Russell Sullivan on January 2nd, 2024. Gen. Sullivan had a remarkable career spanning over 36 years in the United States Army, culminating as the 32nd Army Chief of Staff from 1991 to 1995. After retiring from the Army, Sullivan served as the president and chief executive of the Association of the United States Army for 18 years, from 1998 through June 30, 2016.

Under his leadership as Chief of Staff, Gen. Sullivan oversaw significant changes in the Army’s structure and capabilities as the Cold War came to an end. He played a key role in downsizing the Army after the fall of the Soviet Union, while also modernizing forces and preparing them for new missions like peacekeeping and humanitarian relief operations. Gen. Sullivan was a tireless advocate for soldiers, working to improve living conditions, benefits, and family support programs.

Beyond his military career, Gen. Sullivan was a champion for veterans causes. After retirement, he served on the board of numerous organizations dedicated to veterans’ affairs and national security. He leaves behind a legacy of exemplary service and leadership to his country. Sullivan served as the chairman of the board of trustees of Norwich University, the Army Historical Foundation, and the Marshall Legacy Institute, as well as a member of the MITRE Army Advisory Board, the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Advisory Board, and a Life Trustee of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.

Our founder, Samir Becic’s deepest condolences go out to Gen. Sullivan’s family and friends during this difficult time. His passing represents the loss of a great patriot who devoted his life to defending our nation and supporting those who served. While he will be missed, his many contributions and impact on the Army will endure. May his family find comfort in the memories and the gratitude of an entire nation. He is an American hero!
